The night sky has a special sparkle at this time of the year, as if it has been polished to a new brightness by the fresh light of the winter solstice. The darkness eases its grip a little, and we get a fractionally longer grip on our day. The Magi, Three Wise Men, or Caspar, Balthazar, and Melchior to you and me, followed their own star on a prolonged journey to lavish strange gifts upon a tiny pauper, born in a manger.

Guided by a beautiful light that shimmered in the East, they found their infant. The gave him frankincense and myrrh, and by the time their visit ended the baby was anointed King of Kings. The Christmas tradition of giving was also granted a royal seal.

You can still look to the heavens for inspiration as they gleam back at you. Closer to home, you only have to look into the eyes of a child to see the spell of enchantment. The reflection of infinite possibility and total trust that all is right with the world. Just as sure as the planets have their orbits, the mind of the child turns in the certainty that the morning will deliver on all their dreams.
