Let squabbles begin as Budget countdown starts

With the passage of the abortion legislation through the Dail dealt with, albeit with the marathon debate in the Seanad yet to come, the Government's focus is shifting back to the preparations for Budget 2013. The condition of the economy can be described as stable, if still fragile.

Since the promissory note deal, there has been a great deal of comment about using a €1bn dividend to scale back on the planned €3bn tax rises and spending cuts next year.

Multiple means for spending the money have been posited, from reducing the adjustment package to investment in jobs stimulus.
