The home renovation scheme appears to be something of a winner, with few downsides. Since it was introduced in October 2013, it has given homeowners help in meeting the costs of improving, extending or upgrading their homes.

In some cases, it meant that long-delayed repairs were finally dealt with. That of itself is beneficial.

It has also created jobs in the building sector, which was dealt a hammer blow by the banking and property collapse from 2008 onwards. Latest figures tell us that some 9,500 contractors have become involved in the scheme and it has generated work valued at €1.3bn so far.
