It is hard to say "we told you so" with any kind of grace. But the help-to-buy-scheme unveiled in last year's Budget appears to be doing precisely what its critics warned at the time of its announcement.

Only the most cynical can take pleasure here.

Today we report the brutal reality that homebuyers are paying an additional €19,000 for their homes when prices are compared with 12 months ago. This effectively means that any gain from the Government's help-to-buy scheme is set at nought.
