Heed this call for grants body

DATA obtained by the Union of Students in Ireland under the Freedom of Information Act reveals a shambolic system of assessing student grant applications by local authorities.

If a young person seeking to go on to third level comes from a household that feels it will qualify for a grant, it follows that it is not very well off.

Yet some of the 66 local authorities and VECs are so slow to process applications that many students do not receive their grants -- principally to help pay for accommodation and food -- until well into the academic year.
