Gravy train must be stopped now

People in the old Soviet Union used to describe, quietly, their rulers as the "Kompressor class", in a reference to the name on the better kind of Mercedes.

The €713,000 retirement package for the retired secretary general to the Government may finally wake Irish people up to the fact that a new Kompressor class has been created during the years of apparent plenty.

It will make people angry, agreed Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore. It will be regarded as unfair, said Fine Gael Minister Brian Hayes. Richard Bruton joined them in acknowledging that severance packages of that size are too generous. They too are members of the new, immensely well-padded, governing elite. Are they really going to dismantle the system until they share the same kind of life as the bulk of those they seek to represent and govern?
