Garda over-runs raise questions

The revelation that the cost of providing Garda security for last year's visits by US President Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth of the UK was 80pc higher than had originally been forecast does not portray the force's senior management in a flattering light.

As we report in today's newspaper, Garda management originally predicted that the costs of the two visits would total €20m. However, by the time the final bills came in the total cost had soared to €36m, of which €28m went on Garda overtime and allowances.

That works out at an average of €3,500 per head for each one of the 8,000 gardai who took part in the massive security operation last May.
