Fare hikes push commuters away

As we report in today's paper, this week's emergency injection of €36m into CIE by Transport Minister Leo Varadkar is likely to result in a 6pc fare increase early next year.

This increase will come on top of fare increases which are already planned by the state transport company and run the risk of pushing even more people out of buses and trains and into their cars.

As Mr Varadkar observed, CIE is now confronted by a "perfect storm" with fuel costs rising and passenger numbers falling. Matters weren't helped by an average 13pc fare increase earlier this year.
