Enforce the law, save lives on our roads
Given that the shelves of the Law Library are creaking under the weight of new volumes, it is surprising that not until this June did gardaí have the power to arrest people on the spot who are caught driving while banned. So far, four motorists have been jailed and 117 have been charged.
It should be remembered that at the moment some 25,000 people have been disqualified from driving.
It made a complete nonsense of the law that penalty points and court rulings could be ignored and a driver could get back behind the wheel with impunity.
The scale of the abuse is evidenced by the fact that 87 of those pulled over in recent weeks were indeed disqualified.
A new system whereby car ownership and a driver's licence are to be linked is soon to be introduced.
It should not be forgotten that this is about saving lives.
As the latest figures show that 93 people have been killed on the road already this year, the more enforcement there is, the better.
