Enda was ruthless but Lucinda earned respect
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has shown his ruthless streak by forcing most wavering Fine Gael backbenchers to support the abortion bill. It is another sign that behind an affable public exterior lies a calculating and determined politician who knows how to wield power.
The alternative, as Fine Gael's Michelle Mulherin memorably put it, was to be "booted out" of the party.
Mr Kenny has an enormous government majority – so he could afford to take a hard line and deny the free vote that many Fine Gael backbenchers had been calling for.
