End of a dream for Kilkenny
MANY tried and failed, but history will surely say that the highest hopes were reposed in Kilkenny yesterday. It is commonly said, and probably true, that this was the greatest hurling team of all time. Perhaps they could grasp the most elusive prize of all, five All-Ireland championships in a row.
It was not to be. Yesterday they met something whose existence had been doubted -- a better team.
Lovers of the game knew that if a better team did exist, it had to be Tipperary. Their quality was beyond question. They had come close to beating Kilkenny last year. A disappointment like that might daunt a lesser side, but the Tipperary players are made of sterner stuff. Yesterday they believed that their time had come, and they proved it.
