Robberies and break-ins are the scourge of decent people in this country. They are as big a problem in urban areas as they are in rural areas, and people have had enough. So, it is a pleasure to have two pieces of good news to offer today.

The first is that gardaí in the greater Dublin area are being re-organised to help them better combat the problem.

The second is that, where people combine to fight the problem, they can show some winning results. We heartily congratulate participants in the Muintir na Tíre text alert scheme around Thurles whose co-operation has led to a 20pc decline in this heinous crime.
