Editorial: Serious allegations must be answered by St Vincent's
IT WAS already signposted as a difficult day for St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin as the elite top-up payments spotlight moved in its direction.
Then one of its own senior staff raised an additional very serious issue. Professor John Crown, a member of Seanad Eireann and a consultant oncologist, accused his bosses of 'a cover-up' in regard to serious allegations. He said the hospital had been charging cancer patients' insurers for anti-cancer drugs which the hospital was getting free.
These statements come from one of our most distinguished members of the Oireachtas and must be given urgent attention. The allegations relate to money allegedly fraudulently taken from the VHI and other health insurers and date back as far as 2002.
