Editorial: Relief at ESB deal but serious questions remain
IT IS extremely good news and it is nice to start the week on a positive note. We are all relieved to hear that Ireland will not be faced with the threat of a power blackout as the ESB unions and management last night agreed to settle their dispute over pension funding. Once again, we are indebted to the sensible and skilful negotiators at the Labour Relations Commission for pulling things back from a dangerous brink.
Before the LRC's intervention, it looked as if Ireland would take one step forward next week by exiting the EU-IMF bailout – only to take another large step backwards with a power workers' strike.
But as the nation heaves a large collective sigh of relief, we are also entitled to pose a number of questions here.
