Editorial: Opposition has a right to reply -- in the Dail

RTE is rightly very conscious of its public service obligation to uphold balance and fairness in its radio and television news output. Affording the right of reply is an important feature of that obligation. By and large the station has a solid record in such matters over the years.

On Sunday, Taoiseach Enda Kenny addressed the nation for seven minutes to mark the end of three years of close economic supervision from the EU and IMF. So, last night Fianna Fail, Sinn Fein and an Independent representative were -- in the interests of balance and fairness -- given access to the airwaves to reply.

That might have looked like fairness and balance. But in reality it had more to do with "buggin's turn" or "one for almost everyone in the audience".
