As the party faithful congregate in Co Kerry for their ard fheis this weekend, the Labour leader, Eamon Gilmore, has signalled his intention to bring new blood into the Cabinet in 2014.

This automatically leads to the question of which Labour Party minister will have to depart from what has been described as 'a Cabinet of old men'.

Being ageist, the focus of attention will almost certainly shift to Education Minister Ruairi Quinn, who has been in the Dail since 1977 (36 years) and Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Minister Pat Rabbitte, who has been in the Dail for a quarter of a century.
