Disappearing bees a concern
Albert Einstein once said: "If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination. . . no more men!" Einstein was only a mere physicist, it is true, but today's entomologists agree that the sudden and mysterious disappearance of bees from their hives poses serious problems.
Even in these lean times, the Government is prepared to fund a research project to find ways of saving Irish bees.
A considerable amount of research has already been carried out in the US, where the disappearance of entire colonies of bees was first noticed, but the phenomenon remains a mystery.
