Dark hours and new dawns ahead as country looks to move forward
'WE NOW face one of the darkest hours in the history of our independent State.' Thus begins the preamble to the programme for the incoming Government, published yesterday after a Labour special conference endorsed the decision of the party leadership to enter a coalition with Fine Gael.
As to the darkness of the hour, there can be no dispute. The national emergency continues unabated. We have endured hard times, but more lie ahead. We have also suffered a horrendous lack of confidence, which must be restored.
Nor can there be any dispute that we have conspicuously lacked clear, competent political leadership. In the general election, the electors decisively rejected the Fianna Fail-Green Coalition, which had failed to lead, and voted for Fine Gael and Labour in search of something better.
