Dail must become more relevant
Nine days after he first admitted knowingly filing a false VAT return, the Dail has yet to debate TD Mick Wallace's tax affairs.
While yesterday's statement from the Wexford TD, in which he promised to use half of his Dail salary to help pay his €2.1m settlement with the Revenue Commissioners, will have bought him some time, the whole affair highlights once again just how irrelevant the Dail has become.
Ever since it emerged last week that Mr Wallace's firm MJ Wallace Ltd had reached a €2.1m settlement with the Revenue Commissioners after Mr Wallace had deliberately filed false VAT returns on its behalf in 2008 and 2009, the pink-shirted TD has dominated the TV and radio news bulletins and the newspaper headlines. After all it isn't every day that a TD is found to be cheating the taxman.
