Concerns grow on apartments' safety

Another Dublin apartment complex has been declared unsafe by fire officers. Tenants will have to move out of the 80 flats in The Laurels, in Dundrum, for up to three months while workmen remedy the faults discovered during routine repair work.

Their rents, utility bills, the cost of moving and some travel expenses will be covered. The management agency, Bennetts Property, will help them to find suitable accommodation. Alternatively, they can opt out of their leases without loss.

Their situation makes a remarkable contrast with the plight of the owner-occupiers of the notorious Priory Hall, on the other side of the city. In the Priory Hall case, 261 people were forced out of unsafe accommodation to face both homelessness and serious financial loss.
