Coalition on the cards

IT would be too much to expect that last night's televised debate would make a significant difference to the outcome of the election. But it was well worth the party leaders giving it their best.

There is still much to play for, to judge from our latest poll. Not as to who will be Taoiseach. That chalice will pass to Enda Kenny. But the people elect a Dail, not a Taoiseach and the shape of the 31st Dail is far from certain. Much will depend on the exact outcome.

Today's opinion poll suggests that Fine Gael may come up too short to form a stable government on its own. It is in a remarkable position, with every expectation of it having well over 70 seats. That would have seemed impossible at the start of the campaign but the momentum seen in the previous polls seems to have stalled.
