Christy will be missed by all who knew him - and many who didn't

He carried celebrity with such a jaunty lack of self-regard, you probably did not have to know Christy O'Connor Junior to like him.

Because "Junior" bore the easy smile and almost reflex self-deprecation of a man who understood that life could throw up far more treacherous challenges than a 235-yard iron over water beneath the sceptical glare of millions.

So the news that he had passed away at just 67 swung shudderingly through the golf world yesterday, not simply for the loss of a gifted senior player and revered course designer, but for someone universally loved.
