Challenges for office of the DPP
James Hamilton retired yesterday as Director of Public Prosecutions. As he cultivates his garden, he can look back with considerable satisfaction on his 12-year tenure as DPP.
Notably, he opened up to a greater degree of public scrutiny an office which had always been secretive -- as well as under-funded.
He comforted many crime victims, and families of victims, by revealing (though of necessity only in some cases) his reasons for not bringing a prosecution.
