Ceann Comhairle needs independence

The Ceann Comhairle is basically a political referee and Sean Barrett - something of a sporting man himself - must realise the sad fact is that very few people really like the referee. It would also seem to be true that some people were, or indeed are, out to get him.

That said it is also a powerful position that needs to be handed with tact and delicacy. Mr Barrett's recent outburst was shrill and he was right to apologise for it. Now he cannot afford another outburst - or any controversy of the magnitude of the last 10 days - or he will certainly have to go.

In the interest of democracy, the Ceann Comhairle should be independent, politically and intellectually. The position has long been abused by the major political organisations and used as a tool to guarantee the party a seat following a general election.
