Candidates need to step up to plate
THREE weeks remain before polling day in the presidential election: roughly the normal length of time for an election campaign. Perhaps reflecting this, the campaign of the Fine Gael candidate, Gay Mitchell, was not launched until yesterday.
But the general feeling among the citizens is that the contest has been going on for months. And of course the citizens are right.
It began with Fianna Fail's contortions on the question whether or not to fight the election. The party leader, Micheal Martin, adamantly opposed what he regarded as a waste of money which would lead only to a humiliating defeat.
