Brexit compromises needed for progress

The Brexiteers have dug a deep hole in the heart of Europe, and the British government has been looking into it for 14 months. At some point, those responsible must dispense with the shovels and start building ladders.

Making his first trip to Belfast as Taoiseach yesterday, Leo Varadkar used more diplomatic language to make the same point.

Mr Varadkar has found himself upbraided for pointing out the obvious.
