Banks must lend again to aid house prices

After the 0.2pc increase in May, the first such increase recorded in almost five years, the 1.1pc fall recorded in house prices for the month of June was extremely disappointing.

Any tentative hopes that the May house price increase might represent the beginning of an upward trend have been dashed at least for now.

Following the latest decrease, the average house price fall since the top of the boom has now hit the psychologically important 50pc level.
