Baby boom cost must now be met

Figures released yesterday by the Central Statistics Office, which show that the number of births recorded in 2009 was the highest since 1891, demonstrate the need for forward planning on the part of the Government to ensure that the educational, health, housing and other needs of these children are adequately catered for.

In 2009, 75,554 children were born in the Republic of Ireland.

This was the highest number of births for 118 years.
