A slow 'bicycle race' to pick next taoiseach
It is simply not acceptable. We are at serious risk of facing into a very uncertain world without a credible taoiseach.
In fact we are at risk of even being without a government early next month when British Prime Minister Theresa May formally opens UK-EU divorce proceedings. It is no exaggeration to say this is the single biggest challenge facing us since World War II.
The current scenario is best described as a slow bicycle race which has not even properly started. The two putative frontrunners to succeed, Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar and Housing Minister Simon Coveney, are effectively hobbled by Taoiseach Enda Kenny's refusal to state his intentions.
