A rocky road to park for Gaybo
Gay Byrne for President? The question took on real meaning yesterday, when Ireland's most popular broadcaster said he was consulting friends on the subject and a radio poll showed that a clear majority of respondents thought he should run.
The poll finding should be read with caution. There is a world of difference between agreeing that someone should become a candidate for office and deciding to vote for him. But evidently Mr Byrne took the event, understandably, as an invitation.
Yesterday, too, expressions of support came from various quarters. Some arrived in the form of purple prose, as when Pat Kenny described the potential candidate as "the father of the nation".
