A depressing insight

A CLUE as to how little the public really knows about what goes on behind the scenes in Government and the public service is contained in a letter which concluded with the apocalyptic statement: "Minister, on behalf of the IDA Board, I cannot overstate the gravity and urgency of this situation."

The letter was written by Liam O'Mahony, chairman of the Investment and Development Agency (IDA) and sent to the Minister for Enterprise Trade and Innovation, Batt O'Keeffe, and was dated May 20 last.

Mr O'Keeffe had recently succeeded Mary Coughlan in the employment ministry, and the letter refers to "many months of frustration" waiting for a decision to be made on IDA staffing levels.
