A critical time for North Korea

It is hard, even in the week before Christmas, to feel much sympathy for Kim Jong-Il, the North Korean dictator whose death was announced yesterday.

This monster squandered billions on nuclear weapons while hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of his people starved.

Ever since Mr Kim's father, and predecessor as dictator, Kim Il-Sung launched an unprovoked attack on his southern neighbour in June 1950, North Korea has been an international menace.
