‘You’re disabled, how will you be celebrating Valentine's Day?’
Jennifer McShane talks about love and disability
As it is Valentine's weekend, I figured I would be asked the standard question: so, how many cards/gifts did you receive? However, I was more than a little surprised when instead I was asked: “So, you’re disabled, how will you be celebrating Valentine's Day?”
“Em, the same as everyone else?,” came my quick response. (I actually try not to celebrate the day as I can’t stand the commercialism, but that's beside the point).
The question was not meant to mean or offensive, but from what I could tell, genuine curiosity as to how someone with mild Cerebral Palsy (CP) would mark the romantic day. And genuine surprise when I said there’s no reason that I would celebrate the day any differently to anyone else.
