Whatever way you dress it up, I cannot see the purpose of enforcing school uniforms

I’m buying our first school uniform this summer and looking at the list of required items – the blouses, the pinafore, the sports kit, the crest, the tie – and all I can think is: uniforms don’t do what they are supposed to do. All the reasons why people think they are a good idea were crumbling before Covid, and we could surely do without them now.

Primary schools right across Ireland say nice things about nurturing the individual, about encouraging creativity, but when it comes to one of the earliest ways a tiny human expresses their individuality and creativity – the way they look – it is trampled on remorselessly. It breaks my heart.
