There were some warnings - but message was not hammered home

Once again, Mother Nature appears to have caught us out. No one really expected anything other than a light smattering of snow over the weekend, and the blanket which covered large parts of the east yesterday came as something of a shock.

Certainly it resulted in some inconvenience for sports fans and those hoping to enjoy the bank holiday festivities.

Motorists were advised to stay at home, some bus services were curtailed and trains delayed.
