Spare a thought for Brian Stanley this Christmas. The Sinn Féin TD and chair of the Public Accounts Committee is getting it from all sides. When he found himself in a social media storm for a tweet last Saturday, he would have expected Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil opprobrium, but surely he could have expected a stout defence from within his own party?

His tweet - "Kilmicheal (1920) and Narrow Water (1979) the 2 IRA operations that taught the elite of d British army and the establishment the cost of occupying Ireland. Pity for everyone they were such slow learners" - was deleted soon after. He was forced to apologise "for the content of an inappropriate and insensitive tweet that I sent".
