The roadmap to a possible Aer Lingus takeover has become increasingly complex over the past few weeks, but there are really just three routes that could be followed by IAG.

Firstly, Willie Walsh could decide to pull the plug on the whole affair and walk away. In his roles as chief executive of Aer Lingus, British Airways and now IAG, he has clearly shown that he can be stubborn and hard-headed.

Despite having expected resistance to an approach, even he has said that he was surprised at the level of reaction to IAG's attempt to buy Aer Lingus. And that's even with his knowledge of the Irish political landscape.
