Predicted grades don't work - written exam is the only dead cert

It is hard to know what to make of the announcement regarding the Leaving Cert last Friday. The most obvious thing is that it buys some time for Education Minister Norma Foley but in other respects it backs her into a corner. Some hybrid scheme seems on the horizon. It will send a shudder through the teaching ranks, who feel that they played by the rules last year but were let down by the decision to change the system - and by the publishing of teachers' marks and rankings, which were supposed to be confidential.
