Peter Bills: Six Nations a joy to behold for ref Lewis
HE made his Six Nations refereeing debut in a lovely, low-key way. For sure, he was nervous but that didn't mean Alan Lewis would abandon the habits of a lifetime.
Inside the first half-hour of handling the Italy v England match of 2000 in Rome, he'd yellow-carded three players and reminded both captains of their responsibilities.
"Perhaps they thought I was an inexperienced referee they'd have some fun with," smiles the Cork-born official.
