For people who have faced cancer or some other dreaded disease, there is often a gap of a few hours – or even a few days – between the diagnostic tests and the meeting with the doctor to receive the official news.

In my experience, patients read or pray or go on long walks until a feeling sets in that they are fully braced. Then, the reality becomes official, and it knocks them out.
