The last time guests stood at the Garden of Remembrance for an important civic ceremony was on the historic occasion when Queen Elizabeth visited Ireland in 2011.

The memorial to all those who died in the cause of Irish freedom has held a special significance since veterans of 1916 attended the opening of the memorial by President Éamon de Valera in 1966.

Amongst them was Joe Gahan, who had fought at the GPO in Easter week and who was brought in on a stretcher to attend the ceremony.
