Michael Carty: Special Garda units must be prepared to prevent a terrorist atrocity here
The carnage visited on the Belgian capital, where both Nato and the EU are headquartered, once again demonstrates the capacity of terrorist organisations to strike at will, and this despite the most advanced and sophisticated efforts by the security authorities. The brutal reality is that there will be more such attacks. That is a certainty.
Experience has demonstrated all too vividly that terrorism is part of the human condition and there will always be men and women who are prepared to use extreme violence to further their ambitions when their arguments fail.
The threat ebbs and flows like the tide, but at no time have the attacks been more ruthless, sustained or effective than in recent years.
