He has been tartly described as “more post office than box office”, or more kindly as “not charismatic but very decent”. Chances are you may struggle to remember who Mark Drakeford actually is.

But the bookish leader of the Welsh home-rule government deserves to be better known in Ireland for his masterful management of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis – and also for his strong stance on Brexit, which is very much in line with that of Ireland.
