Local authorities can no longer be seen as a soft touch

It's no great surprise that local authorities are owed money, particularly given the pressures that many households and businesses have experienced in recent years.

But two things from the local government audits stand out - the level of the outstanding debt and the lack of effort being made by city and county councils to recover what's owed.

Despite much of this debt being considered historical, the auditor says many councils are failing to assess how much will realistically be recovered.
