Stage-fright is an exceedingly rare affliction among the medical profession. Recent years have seen a veritable epidemic of doctors on our TV screens. Popular British series like Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies have made household names of medics like Dr Christian Jessen and Cork-born Dr Pixie McKenna, while the schedules abound with hospital reality programmes and health advice shows.

Seeing a doctor -while not being seen by one - has never been easier.

Irish TV has also succumbed to the contagion. Operation Transformation, RTE's weight-loss series, has just completed its eighth season, attracting an average weekly audience of 470,500 viewers.
