About the only positive thing I can say about Donald Trump is that he has woken us up from complacency and apathy.

The sight of millions of women, and some men, protesting in the street about real issues reminds those of us sitting on couches watching TV that we had better begin to act and not just whinge. There are so many things in life that we had begun to take for granted. Suddenly we again realise that cherished freedoms that have been hard won can disappear far quicker than any of us imagined.

We have seen many angry, but short-lived, protests over the years. Paris and Charlie Hebdo, the Ferguson shooting, at home the water charges and the 8th Amendment, But last weekend was different. This time it will not be short-lived. A man with loathsome views has been democratically elected.
