It’s not often you hear the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, America’s health protection agency, openly express fear for the future, but that is what Dr Rochelle Walensky did yesterday.

We have so much to look forward to, so much promise and potential of where we are and so much reason for hope. But, right now, I’m scared,” she said, adding that she had a sense of “impending doom” about increasingly lax attitudes to Covid restrictions.
