Jesus said: "Suffer the little children to come unto me." At which point, presumably, he gave them a good hard slap and sent them to bed without any supper. Don't look so disapproving. It's the Christian way.

Don't take my word for it. It's not often that a man with a direct line to God gives you permission to unleash your inner bully, but that's exactly what happened last week, when His Holiness, Pope Francis, told thousands of worshippers in St Peter's Square that it's OK for parents to "correct with firmness".

There's an interesting euphemism, if ever there was one. Can we lovingly "correct" the cat with a kick up the rear end too?
