When my son was nine years old, he played rugby, football and hockey, sometimes all on the same day. He would often have friends to stay over, and whether they were out in the garden playing or holed up in his bedroom, you could hear the endless chatter and laughter all day long.

They were obsessed with swapping football cards, collecting stickers, playing board games, reading comics, and doing, well, all the things nine-year-olds are supposed to do. And did do, back in the day, when mobile phones had not yet taken over our children’s lives.
