One of the overriding ambitions of Ireland in 2016 was that people everywhere, at home and abroad, would discover more about 1916. The personification of this ambition has been the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann whose contribution in honouring our forebears has lent dignity and respect to all the commemorative ceremonies this year.

From the raising of the national flag at the GPO, the parade on Easter Sunday and the delivery of the national flag and Proclamation to over 3,300 national schools - the uniting element has been the presence of our Defence Forces, both permanent and reserve, displaying the professionalism and high standards which they apply to all of their roles and missions.

This central role played by those serving in this important year has been acknowledged by Government in recent weeks with the presentation of the 1916 Centenary Commemorative Medal to all Defence Forces personnel.
